Absent member. 00:00:18
It's absent. Remember Weisen. 00:00:21
Member Gamble. 00:00:26
And Chair Goldsmith. 00:00:27
Umm, any changes, additions or approval to the agenda? 00:00:33
Seeing none agenda is approved. 00:00:40
Board and staff announcements. 00:00:45
We can start. 00:00:48
Staff announcements. 00:00:49
We just have a couple of announcements. The 1st is. 00:00:59
Holiday Parade of Lights does follow this meeting. It's today starting at 6:00 PM, starting at Fountain and Lighthouse. It's a 00:01:02
wonderful event. It was rained out last year, so we are super excited that it's on this year. The Chamber of Commerce is putting 00:01:09
that on and we just welcome anyone who's watching to put on a warm coat, grab some Christmas lights and head down there. 00:01:16
They are also putting on still bowls Holiday in the Park on Saturday and that will be at Caledonia Park and that's from 11:00 to 00:01:23
3:00. And they have quite a lot of like fun winter activities for the children as well as Santa Claus. And information on both of 00:01:29
these events can be found on the chamber website. They have a lot of information as well as their Facebook page. So we just 00:01:36
encourage everyone to come down their great events for the whole family. 00:01:42
OK. Thank you. 00:01:49
Commission announcements. 00:01:52
I just have two quick announcements. One is that on December 20th, Amy Colony is going to make a presentation to the City Council 00:01:57
about the Chinese Pavilion project. 00:02:03
And the second announcement is from Darrell Smith, who couldn't be here tonight and he's very enthusiastic about the new soccer 00:02:10
program that is commenced and wants to thank staff. 00:02:16
Council liaison is Nick Smith is he's not present. 00:02:25
Is that correct? 00:02:30
He indicated before the meeting that he'll not. He won't be present. City Council is in the parade this evening. OK. 00:02:32
OK. 00:02:40
We're going to go to general public comment, but before we do that, I wanted to announce that we did have. 00:02:43
A total of 7 written comments that were received by the rec board and those will be noted. Is there anybody online does not look 00:02:52
like that. 00:02:58
For public. 00:03:06
General public comments must deal with matters subject to the jurisdiction of the city and the recreation board. 00:03:09
That are not on the regular agenda. Comments from the public will be limited to 3 minutes and will not receive Recreation Board 00:03:15
action. 00:03:20
Comments regarding items on the regular agenda shall be heard prior to Rec. Board consideration of such items as the time such 00:03:24
items are called. 00:03:28
Whenever possible, written correspondence should be submitted to the record in advance of the meeting to provide adequate time for 00:03:33
its consideration. 00:03:38
Public. 00:03:46
And there are none online. 00:03:48
The minutes are not included with this meeting's agenda. They will be submitted for the next meeting and approved at that time. 00:03:54
And we can go on to the regular agenda. 00:04:07
The first item A is update for the skate park and George Washington Park playground. 00:04:10
And is Mr. Go here or will Katie, will you be making that presentation? 00:04:18
I'll be making that presentation tonight. 00:04:25
The first item is the skate park. 00:05:59
OK, on July 27th, 2023, Recreation Board voted to bring forward two possible skate park locations to the City Council for 00:06:10
consideration. Those two locations were the youth center parking lot and the area adjacent to the mechanical department In That'll 00:06:17
be a clear indicator that we definitely need to update something and see if maybe a different time works better, if different 00:06:24
programming works better. We're just trying to make it as accessible to the youth as possible. 00:06:32
And we are always looking for feedback from the community, from the REC board, from City Council. 00:06:39
On where else to take the program? 00:06:45
I think following up with that, you mentioned that you're getting information about kind of programming for middle schoolers and 00:06:49
high schoolers. Can you give us some examples of what you're hearing? 00:06:55
Activities. 00:07:01
We've received several requests for some type of art programming. Umm, we've received some requests for theater programming. We 00:07:03
received some requests for just. 00:07:08
Different types of clubs, games, gaming, that type of activities. I don't have the full list off the top of my head. Some of them 00:07:16
are obviously easier to implement than others. It's easier to find some of those really, you know, intricate. 00:07:24
Games, board games, those type of. 00:07:31
Activities sometimes, you know, that can be quite elaborate and we just need to find someone who knows how to play that game and 00:07:36
can be there with the youth or train our staff. 00:07:40
And so some of those just means we need to reach back out to the community to get those. 00:08:16
I mean if if the students themselves know. 00:08:21
To. 00:08:24
I mean, could it be set up where they're the ones? I mean, there's a staff person on site, but they can almost organize it and get 00:08:26
all the, you know, other students. 00:08:30
And and I'm going back again to the outreach beyond just PG USC, especially at the high school level. 00:08:36
Of, I don't know, just have to maybe brainstorm and I'm sure you all have. How do you get? 00:08:45
The word out to those who aren't, you know, I I wondered. You say the city manager's report is one way to get the word out. 00:08:54
But where does that come out? Where does the city manager report? 00:09:01
The city manager's report comes out twice a month. It's published every Friday following City Council meetings. 00:09:06
On the website. 00:09:16
Yeah, on the city website. And then from the city website you can also subscribe to it and then it'll pop up each each month, each 00:09:18
two weeks for you to repeat like next door. 00:09:23
Other Instagram, I mean I don't know that many people that go that go to a Swift city website versus a social media getting it out 00:09:29
and Facebook. 00:09:34
Is for us old people. I'm learning how to get it to to young people that would be excited and see the information themselves and. 00:09:40
No. 00:09:50
Thinking aloud of how to get it out there. 00:09:54
Yeah, I like the idea too, of students teaching students, especially some of these games, because they might be really 00:09:59
enthusiastic, but they want to play with other people so they can also act as teachers, which I like that. 00:10:06
Well, this kind of goes back to something that our public director Dan Go said was that in the past we had a printed program, an 00:10:14
activity guide, and that is going to be resumed. 00:10:21
And so that would be another vehicle for getting the word out. 00:10:28
Mr. Go did say that is going to happen again. One of the complaints I heard about soccer was that some families already had signed 00:10:36
up for soccer and say Carmel because they didn't know it was going to happen and it happened a little bit later in the season. So 00:10:43
I'm wondering what is the time framework or what would be the time framework for getting this activity guide out for 2024 so that 00:10:50
families looking at it can say. 00:10:57
I could sign my child up to play soccer and PG rather than going out of the area. 00:11:05
OK. I didn't mean to put you on the spot, Katie. I mean, I know you don't have all the answers and you can't speak for everything 00:11:33
that's happening. But I'm certainly going to ask you so that we start thinking along those lines because that would be something 00:11:39
that would be very helpful and beneficial to have that out and apparently it was done in the past. 00:11:46
Yes. 00:11:55
I can. We are actively looking at the program guide. I've had a great deal of experience with program guide in my in previous 00:11:57
positions. I'm very familiar with it. We've already done a lot of research on it. We have a lot of what we would need in place. We 00:12:03
do, we are before we can. 00:12:10
Set dates or information on when we could release it or what that would entail. We do need We are still getting direction from 00:12:17
City Council and internally with the city manager and my director, Director of Public Works. 00:12:23
We would need some of those information before we could speak more to that, but I just wanted to assure record this is something 00:12:29
that I've done multiple times. We're already working. We've been working for the last couple of months to kind of get ourselves 00:12:35
ready for when this request came forward so that we can be ready to jump on it and do it. So it's definitely in the skill set that 00:12:41
we have in this department and we'll be, it'll be really good. 00:12:47
OK. That's really good to hear. 00:12:53
Do any Commissioners have any? 00:12:58
Final comments for the meeting. OK, I know everybody wants to go to the parade, so. 00:13:01
Let's conclude this meeting. 00:13:08
456 it looks like. And thank you all for being here tonight. This was a rescheduled meeting, so again, really appreciate it. 00:13:11
Appreciate staff being here too. 00:13:16
And our interim city manager, thank you very much for attending. 00:13:22
