Do you want me to call the word? 00:00:05
And then ohh boy. 00:00:07
All right, everyone. I'm going to call this meeting of the downtown business improvement districts special meeting to order at. 00:00:11
831 M. 00:00:19
And all of the people that we have online and in the room have met each other. We all know one another. So we can skip past 00:00:22
welcome and introductions and go straight to public comment on items that are not currently on the agenda today. 00:00:30
Do we have anybody online or in the room that would like to make public comments? 00:00:38
Looking. 00:00:44
I'm OK. 00:00:47
OK. 00:00:48
Anyone in the room have any public comment? 00:00:49
All right. Moving right along. 00:00:52
We are taking up this item again because we didn't have copies at our last meeting. So what you had sent to you as Advisory Board 00:00:56
was the budget that is part of the annual report for each one of the. 00:01:03
Assessment districts and you have to do this in March. And so number one, that's always a trick. But Laurie Friday at the City, 00:01:12
she helps me every year do estimates and whatnot. But you do have to turn this in pretty early. So the numbers are. 00:01:19
They're all an estimate for what we think we're going to have in 2324, which is also why I printed out for the Advisory Board the 00:01:28
current balance sheet and the reason why it wasn't in the packet was because. 00:01:34
I don't have access to this. My bookkeeper does and Two is out of town, so I just got it yesterday. So everyone in the room has a 00:01:40
copy. Laurie, I will give you a copy of it to post after the meetings for the public inside as well. 00:01:46
So as you can see, if you look from one to the other, we're not that far off as far as what we have in the bank and what we 00:01:53
estimated we would have in banks. So we're pretty unpar, which makes me happy. It's kind of nice to see them close to one another. 00:02:01
And the reason why this was on the agenda at the last meeting was because we were making determination about the donation to the 00:02:09
youth ambassadors. And and I had said that last year we had donated, if you look in the in the different line items, community 00:02:16
projects or promotion of events, we had given money to the Butterfly days to Dixie Lane last year. She's not going to be doing 00:02:24
extra things this year for that program. So it felt like a natural. 00:02:31
Please put those those monies. 00:02:39
So this is just open discussion. Anybody have any questions about? 00:02:42
How this is typically laid out. I'm using a pretty similar template from what you've used for the VIP for probably over a decade, 00:02:48
so I'm not changing much in here. I am just putting a little bit more detail so you can see advertising broken down a little bit. 00:02:55
Again, the budget typically is around 34,000 for the full fiscal year. It looks like we will be right there this year as well. 00:03:03
It's not a ton, but it's enough to do some projects and makes me. 00:03:08
Any questions? 00:03:17
I can go out to public comment as well. On this item, there's one who wants to. 00:03:20
Nobody in the room, what should we put should guide to PG. So this is a 2 page spread of anyone who's so the guide VG is something 00:03:29
with the Chamber of Commerce says one here If the benefit our membership and we give those things out we're going to run through 00:03:36
all of them this year, which we haven't done in a while. It's been a few years so it's very exciting. We have a two page spread 00:03:43
that lists any person who is in the downtown Business Improvement District that isn't already in the guide and the listing is. 00:03:50
That spread, that said, downtown business group, district number. So those are all the businesses that are in the BID are listed 00:03:57
in our guide a little bit differently from our members. Our members get that full listing of address, emails and what phone 00:04:03
numbers this is just ohh Christy help me, I believe it's there. 00:04:08
Their storefront address, correct? 00:04:14
Sorry, I'm going out to my staff member. 00:04:17
Maybe I'll answer here. 00:04:21
Yes, she is. 00:04:23
I will bring it next time so you guys can see it. I have examples, but it's it's listed a little bit differently and it is 00:04:25
specific to to the bid, but everybody is in the back. So we the bid helps with the cost of the back. 00:04:31
So that's. 00:04:40
Any questions? You everybody feel like it's pretty basic? 00:04:44
Seen it? Yeah, it works. And you know, maybe it's a question to put out there for the future is. 00:04:49
Yeah. Do we have any? 00:04:57
You know regulations would like to make it. We wanted evaluate things a little bit at some point in the future and. 00:04:59
And I would suggest that actually when I go to put the the annual report together in March, I know it sounds like a strange time, 00:05:05
but I think maybe that's a time when we can have the bid look at. 00:05:11
Look at the the document and see you know is there anything that you'd like to add to it or any just make so maybe we back that up 00:05:17
and talk start talking about that in February, January, February. 00:05:22
And it would be interested in maybe having some outreach. You know, just in the course of my day, I often talk to other business 00:05:28
owners and say, like, hey, you know, how come to the big, like, that's great. I would love to, but 830 doesn't suit. 00:05:34
So, you know, I don't know a lot of. 00:05:42
Sit in. 00:05:46
Participating in some way, but you know they need just something. 00:05:48
Thanks. 00:05:51
All right. 00:05:55
The next item is the logo update discussion, so I'm going to turn it over to. 00:05:58
We don't have Steve Thomas on, do we? 00:06:04
No, but I know that you and Steve were working on this, right? I did it. I ended up doing it before. 00:06:07
Comment. 00:06:13
Sorry, sorry everybody. And we're in a different room and there's different audio here. 00:06:17
I'm having a horrible time understanding a lot of the dialogue. Is this being run by an external mic or? 00:06:21
Is is it being picked up by the internal mic and the camera using? If there's an external mic, it might be better to bring it 00:06:28
closer to the group. 00:06:32
Actually, I think it's external. I don't know how far those regions you know. 00:06:37
No. 00:06:43
But I can bring it a little bit closer. 00:06:44
Alright, let's see if that helps. My apologies. Thank you. 00:06:47
And so we just have a meeting next March to brainstorm about budget and. 00:06:52
Maybe we'll talk about recruitment subreddit sometime. 00:07:00
Actually, that's the perfect time. And also talk about the terming out members and serving it. 00:07:04
So perfect. 00:07:10
OK. 00:07:13
So the logo I printed out kind of a guideline for you of kind of what? 00:07:15
We're thinking if we decide to take it to a contest rather than. 00:07:21
You know, give it to a graphic designer. I just came up with some kind of brand identity ideas of. 00:07:28
Kind of which direction we want them to go, as well as technical specifics for file format, how we're going to use it. 00:07:36
As well as a intellectual property statement and a judging statement just saying that, you know, the Downtown Business Improvement 00:07:46
District Board would be the judges and we're not responsible for any loss. 00:07:52
Entry. I just really tried to cover all of our bases in terms of, you know. 00:07:59
Well, I didn't get it. And you know, why wasn't I? 00:08:04
The main thing I think is that kind of what I was thinking. I don't know if there is a graphic design class at PG high. 00:08:10
But it might be interesting to reach out to that instructor because I remember I was at Carmel High in Graphic design and we were 00:08:20
given an assignment that was a logo contest for a local business or something. I can't remember who it was, but the the instructor 00:08:27
actually incorporated that into the the class and it was really good because. 00:08:34
You know, there's some really talented kids at the school, and it might be nice to open that up to them as well, just to make them 00:08:42
aware, because they're. 00:08:46
Excited about, you know? 00:08:50
Those kind of things. I don't know what we would give in terms of a prize. We had talked about, you know, maybe a cash prize. 00:08:53
Umm. 00:09:00
But that's kind of open to discussion, but. 00:09:01
I don't know, you know, in terms of. 00:09:04
And you can take it. I can e-mail it to you, Jason. 00:09:07
Umm. 00:09:11
If there are other descriptive words or other technical things that we want to give to them. 00:09:12
In terms of what we're looking for, but I made it pretty specific so we should get. 00:09:18
You know. 00:09:23
Maybe coffee did a scholarship. 00:09:25
Like if you win, you get a like $1000 scholarship towards college or something. That might be cool. 00:09:28
But that would only be if they were high school, high school students. And this is going to be a mix, right? Yeah, we were 00:09:33
thinking cool. 00:09:37
Component though, yeah. 00:09:41
Umm. 00:09:43
But. 00:09:44
You know and I put in there that we have the right to change it if we need to tweak it to fit our needs and. 00:09:46
I don't know so. 00:09:55
Looks good to me. 00:09:57
I love that idea of having. 00:09:58
A younger perspective because it's hard to move ourselves out of the. 00:10:00
The Leeward amounts. 00:10:06
Nice to see. Yeah, I do need to open it up to public comment and then we'll come back. Is there anyone in the public that is 00:10:08
interested in? 00:10:13
Speaking on this item and then we'll bring it back for further discussion. It doesn't look like anyone's. 00:10:19
OK. 00:10:24
Well, I think we should go ahead and do it. 00:10:27
That's a contest, so we want to vote on that or yeah, it's. 00:10:29
We can. It's not specifically agendas, but we can vote on moving forward with. 00:10:34
This contest, I think potentially we need to ask the city. 00:10:41
If there's anything that they need to look at because we are through the city, so I don't think so. But I think we should be able 00:10:45
to do this. And I mean I think we need to make obviously this is just an outline to make it. 00:10:51
Pretty, yeah. For, you know, However, we're going to present it if it's. 00:10:57
I don't know. On the website on, yeah, you know. 00:11:02
However, we need to go out to the public. Social media, yeah. 00:11:06
Right. 00:11:11
And now it's a good time if you're going to take it up to the high school, because they're just starting. 00:11:12
Yeah. 00:11:16
Jason and Christy, I know you guys are online. Is, is the sound any better? Is it still pretty muffled? 00:11:20
It's a little bit better. It's a. 00:11:27
I might donate a microphone to you guys, but yeah, yeah, it's it's a little better. 00:11:30
You need to. 00:11:35
OK, so next steps then, Yeah. 00:11:37
Would you be able to talk to the city? 00:11:40
Yeah, I'll, yeah, I'll, I'll send it to where I can send it and see if I can just get an answer. The only thing I worry or worry 00:11:43
about, I would think it would be the city attorney. 00:11:48
My guess? 00:11:54
If there's anything. 00:11:55
And the. 00:11:57
For some reason they feel like they would be held liable for something so just because it it's the the sort of drag on our. 00:11:58
Because we meet some frequently, would it be possible to send an e-mail out and say? 00:12:07
And have a go ahead or if you want to put it in place now or going away to the next meeting. 00:12:12
Well, I think that the commit committee, it's UNC. If so, can we can give them the go ahead to just keep moving with it up to the 00:12:19
point of actually launching it. OK. So whatever needs to be done between now and then and then launching, we'll just get the OK 00:12:24
for the next meeting we'll have the. 00:12:30
The campaign ready to launch this, does that work for you? Yeah. And I think maybe, I don't know if Steve's team can put together 00:12:38
a flyer, whatever it is, and the the social media component to that, I can contact him about that and just say we, you know, 00:12:44
agreed to get this going and we're just. 00:12:49
Checking with the city attorney, but let's, you know, get moving. Would we like to have a? 00:12:55
Page on the city website where it says something like if you own a business in downtown Pacific Rd. we welcome you. 00:13:01
There. 00:13:07
It mentions the BID on the city website. Yeah, so the the BD has their description page on the city website. 00:13:09
We could ask if they could put this contest on there as a as a button for people to download. 00:13:18
Well, I was just thinking like this is part of our future, like you know now that we're doing a logo, we like to make that page a 00:13:25
little bit more meaningful in terms of like inviting people to come to the. 00:13:31
Once, maybe you could kill that bird with. 00:13:38
But the same stone, Yes. Well, you could talk to. Yeah, that'll be two different people, but that's OK. 00:13:41
It's alright, but I will talk about it. 00:13:49
Yeah. 00:13:53
That's a logical place to. 00:13:55
So part of the same kind of. 00:13:57
Umm. 00:13:59
Upgrade, yeah. 00:14:01
OK. 00:14:04
That has excellent statement. 00:14:06
I mean. 00:14:12
Ohh no no, go for it because this is all actually these are all yours so. 00:14:14
Steve was actually going to be looking at Steve, but OK, well, I'll move on then to. 00:14:18
Agenda item 6A All are welcome business signage so. 00:14:27
As you probably aware, last month during Pride Month, some legislation was passed Supreme Court saying that businesses don't have 00:14:32
to serve people that if it offends their religion and so. 00:14:40
And that's kind of a big thing and it's not about education, it's not about, it's about businesses and we are businesses and and. 00:14:48
I spoke to the local pride. 00:14:56
Nonprofit and. 00:15:00
Of. 00:15:02
Their board member that I spoke to and said, you know, honestly they're not expecting, you know, a huge backlash in our community, 00:15:03
but we do have a large LGBTQ community and they said. 00:15:10
What's? 00:15:19
Ideally they would like to know if any business did not want to serve them. 00:15:20
But I don't think people are going to put that on the board. 00:15:25
So they're saying, you know what would be positive and kind of it's just an umbrella thing anyway, is there are the signs that say 00:15:28
all are welcome? 00:15:33
And so just as a statement that you know, in these times we are. 00:15:39
Inclusive and we. 00:15:46
You know the value of community members, it's they were just saying, you know, it would be a nice thing for businesses to do. 00:15:48
So I thought that was something was mentioning with the ID. 00:15:57
Meeting and there's different ways that you could go forward with this. One is just. 00:16:00
You know, we don't do anything collectively, just individually. People will put signs up or we could make a statement as a BID 00:16:07
group saying. 00:16:11
We welcome all people in our community. 00:16:16
And you know then that statement is kind of on record as us having a position on this topic, we could even reach out to the ID 00:16:21
numbers and say hey you know this is. 00:16:27
Suggestion. Would you know if you feel that you would like to? 00:16:35
Make a statement about inclusivity. I've been seeing a lot of major business, I mean like huge corporation businesses with like 00:16:42
window claims. That's what I was just thinking about something which, you know, I have vendors that can print that kind of thing. 00:16:49
So, you know, if we came up with a design for one, you know, 4 Pacific growth, it might be neat that, you know, we could. 00:16:56
Give them to anybody, any businesses who are. 00:17:03
You know, I'd be willing to donate those to any businesses who would want them, just so it's very visible. And yeah, I think the 00:17:06
window plan is approved as well. 00:17:10
First thing that popped into my, you know, saying my business alone. I mean, I get people who come in and say, do you do wedding 00:17:15
invitations for same sex couples? And I'm like, of course I do, you know, I'm like, you know, I'll you know, but for them to have 00:17:20
to come to me and ask me. 00:17:25
You know, that could be uncomfortable, but it's like if it's on my window. 00:17:30
You know, we we get a lot too. But there's like you said a small community. So they go like sharing. Larry, you don't care, right? 00:17:34
Yeah. You know if you need anything go see that because they welcome us kind of thing and I know that we get a lot of positive 00:17:39
feedback because we. 00:17:44
Two lesbian daughters. Yeah, yeah, right. But but I know we do get a lot of business because we, you know, are inclusive. 00:17:51
Well, I was told that we've been told. 00:18:00
They we have been considered a safe restaurant, right? I mean it is it is a big deal. It is business too. I was wondering if. 00:18:03
Potentially we could do like a cost proposal maybe and get kind of a. 00:18:11
How much would it cost us to do that if the bid where to buy a certain number of them and then our members could anybody who wants 00:18:16
them, you know contact, they can contact the chamber, we can have them there and then we we would either deliver them or they can. 00:18:23
Pick them up. As far as doing making some sort of a statement from the actual bid itself, I think it would be a good idea to 00:18:29
survey the members if you were to say we were going to come out with a joint statement, so you can absolutely survey the members 00:18:36
on that and do these simultaneously if you'd like, but definitely getting. 00:18:43
We could tell them it's available, you know, Yeah, survey the members and if you want one. 00:18:51
Here's what we've come up with. Those are two separate paths. One, we'll go ahead and make available some details for shops and 00:18:56
people who want to, and secondly, we'll. 00:19:01
I just do a survey. Could you help me do that? 00:19:08
Yeah, absolutely. The wording is really important. 00:19:13
What? You know how much? 00:19:18
Coverage it means for the group and all that kind of thing. So yeah, that would be great. 00:19:21
OK. That is a plan then. Thank you. 00:19:25
So that's what I'm wondering is if if we had imprinted once we have the logo, just so it's kind of. 00:19:30
A branded, you know it doesn't have to be big but just that it's hey, this is the downtown improvement if this if the members 00:19:37
agree that. 00:19:41
That's a that's something they want to support. Yeah. I don't know. Yeah, that's a good. 00:19:46
Yeah, for sure. 00:19:53
But also, I think all of these can be happening, yeah? 00:19:54
Yeah. 00:20:00
Umm. 00:20:01
Override. 00:20:02
Design or Philosophy? 00:20:03
That you have for we reserve the right to refuse service. 00:20:06
To anyone because sometimes you get an obnoxious. 00:20:10
Oh yeah, yeah. 00:20:14
No, I think it's all are welcome and we have the right to reserve. 00:20:16
Because that means it's it's on the vape, on your character and your behavior. Like, they're totally different. Like, you're 00:20:21
welcome, but you know, if you don't, if you're a ******** we get to kick you out. 00:20:27
The rainbow thing, then you know that. 00:20:34
Right. 00:20:38
And if you go? 00:20:40
Yes, that's the. That's because I don't have anything on my businesses. I have the right to refuse, but I've got people to leave 00:20:42
before. I haven't seen the all our welcome signage window cleanings yet. I'd love to see what they look like. The one that I saw 00:20:48
recently, I think it was at. 00:20:53
Yeah, the other day was a rainbow, like the colors. I think it also included Rams. 00:20:59
You know, like all the colors and it just have simple type and white over it looks all over welcome. OK. 00:21:07
But I mean it could be whatever you know you want it to be. But I we probably, I can probably Google. 00:21:14
40 examples of what they look like you know, but. 00:21:20
You know. 00:21:24
Just It's very visible when it's removed because it's just like, oh, there it is, yeah. 00:21:25
And I think I mean it may not seem like a lot. 00:21:31
To you. But it means ohh absolutely some people in our community. 00:21:34
With all this time. 00:21:41
Supportive so, OK. 00:21:44
Great. Then we have that plan for that as well, so. 00:21:47
Any company public comments or? 00:21:51
For further discussion from the boards, No. See nothing. Let's move on to the next. 00:21:56
So the. 00:22:05
Alzheimer's Association, as you may know, is a very huge national nonprofit and they do a huge event every year. The major 00:22:08
fundraiser is a walk to raise money. 00:22:14
And they haven't had in Monterey. 00:22:20
And it's. 00:22:26
After earlier delivery. 00:22:27
So the they had approached Eric Upman at the Cannery Row Company. Just ask them if Cannery Row would do in a like a a promotion 00:22:29
for them. 00:22:34
And. 00:22:41
He just said being Cannery Row, with all the heavy tourist stuff, you didn't think that it would fly very well. But then he asked 00:22:41
me if specific group would be interested in doing something to support their walk. So basically it's an event called. 00:22:49
Paint the town purple and for a week you have local businesses. 00:22:56
Like put purple balloons or purple. 00:23:02
Something anything on their business and give out literature like leaflets from they will supply all this about the Alzheimer's 00:23:04
Association and and just like have your staff and have everybody tell the passers by hey please sign up for the walk in Monterey. 00:23:11
So really that's all it is is promoting their walk because they want to get as many people walking as possible have a huge event 00:23:18
so. 00:23:24
There's a few strands to it. You can give a prize for the. 00:23:34
The the most beautiful shop front. And that's all purple. 00:23:41
You know you can. 00:23:45
I didn't know that. I think that was the main. 00:23:48
That was the main initiative. The other things that I read weren't snaps appropriate for us, but it's it's got Wear purple 00:23:53
clothing. Use purple balloons and purple streamers. Put a purple flower arrangement in your office reception area. Place the paint 00:24:00
the town purple. Cling in the business window or door. Serve purple food or create a purple dream. Give out purple candies and 00:24:07
cover it purple into your brand outfit, your crew, and purple uniforms or shirts. 00:24:13
We're purple wristbands, purple lapel ribbons and campaign so that people ask you like, oh, what's that for? You say Ohh. 00:24:21
Fundraiser so and. 00:24:29
It's. 00:24:31
It's a constant. I personally care a lot about having had family members that have. 00:24:32
Yeah. 00:24:40
Suffered from dementia and Alzheimer's. 00:24:41
And yeah, anything. I mean, there are some amazing breakthroughs that have you seen in the news. There's some like really, really 00:24:46
promising treatments. And that's all thanks to this kind of thing. 00:24:51
Being just, you know, steadily to their cars, so. 00:24:57
And. 00:25:00
It's. 00:25:02
You know, I I don't know. The bandwidth of business owners is always stretched and I don't know if. 00:25:03
We feel that there would be uptake. I wouldn't wanna do it unless we felt like people would give it a a good effort. 00:25:10
But should I just throw it out for discussion? It's kind of a minimal effort. It's the decorating, you know and and spreading the 00:25:19
word. 00:25:23
Is Monterey. 00:25:28
Downtown Monterey doing anything for it. So it's it's going to be in Monterey. That's a good question. OK. Is it that it starts at 00:25:31
the board? Yeah. It's all moderates and it's yes, it is somewhere in the world. 00:25:37
Yeah. 00:25:43
But I think they use our bike trail, don't they walk all the way down to leverage point? 00:25:44
Yes, they do. Yeah. I think they walked from Monterey to Supergirl. Come back. Right. Because I know people who walk into the 00:25:48
exact route. Yeah. But I I believe that's. 00:25:53
That's what early, yeah, on the bike? 00:25:58
Responsible So. 00:26:02
Right. Well, even more. 00:26:04
Immediate then that's something you actually walking through town. That's that's cool. 00:26:08
Early October is actually a really, I would think, a good time because it's just before the holidays, so it's not on top of any. 00:26:14
Other thing that's happening in the in the community believe that pink and breast cancer. 00:26:22
I mean it's it's the Alzheimer's Association does provide you with like some things, right? 00:26:30
So it's seems really window they'll give you this then. So it's just us getting the word out to the businesses, OK. 00:26:39
And, you know, they have a lot of volunteers. They might need to do some of the leg work, right? That would be great, yeah, 00:26:50
because a lot of times you can send an e-mail, but it's. 00:26:55
It's different. 00:27:00
Filipinos are just, I mean, I, you know, it's I think the personal. 00:27:03
So shall I say to this woman, Allison, who is the local organizer. 00:27:09
Should I tell her that? 00:27:14
We're happy to participate. And could she organize it? Yeah, if she, if she's on her end organizing it and we say, you know, 00:27:17
Pacific Grove, downtown Pacific Grove just wants to participate, then I can give her all of it. Sorry, all of my communication. 00:27:24
Contacts from the bid and then she can start doing the legwork of of letting people know we'll do it on our end as well. But I 00:27:33
think if it doesn't cost anybody, yeah, you know, I would say it's unless you wanna be, right, Right. 00:27:39
And and she did the national press coverage. 00:27:47
You know, that's that's amazing. And he doesn't know who best coverage too. 00:27:52
Show that we're offering Community. 00:27:57
All of these are carrying items. I love it. It's nice. 00:28:00
I said that's true. 00:28:06
So. 00:28:09
Was it something I said? 00:28:11
No. All right. Well, then any. 00:28:14
Any comments? 00:28:18
Let us move on to the next item, which really was what Steve Thomas. 00:28:24
Introduced last week, which I thought was a kind of an interesting, well, really positive idea actually and. 00:28:31
I yes, I did. 00:28:38
Sure. And I'm going to try to remember all the things he said to me. I was having lunch and I was on the phone at the same time. 00:28:41
So there used to be a group. It was totally informal. It was just that one designee from all of these different groups that 00:28:48
already exist. 00:28:55
They would meet once a month and just go over things that may overlap between the different groups. HD, the BID, the chamber, the 00:29:02
EDC. I don't know about the AC. That's the one question mark I had. I had to ask. And then. 00:29:09
Could be the arts district. It could be you know any of these groups anyway, but the the point of the meeting was to see if there 00:29:17
was any overlap or if one group is looking for support from other groups that that's the way to kind of take the. 00:29:25
The micro and maybe macro and let people understand and all of these different groups, what's going on with maybe 1 industry 00:29:34
sector in particular. So Steve said this used to exist. So it's not outside of the character of what PG has done in the past. He 00:29:41
does have notes about how it was loosely organized because it wasn't, it was just. 00:29:48
A meeting, like I said informally, but he has all of that documentation from when it existed prior, way prior to COVID, I believe, 00:29:56
from when we spoke. 00:30:01
So that's also why I was hoping Steve Thomas was here because he has all of that detail for us. 00:30:07
And perhaps what we can do is I can ask Steve to do a presentation on our next meeting to let us know how it was loosely 00:30:13
organized. 00:30:17
And how we can maybe not have to work harder, but work smarter and use use a template that's been used before so. 00:30:23
I think that's a really good idea, he said specifically. 00:30:31
You know it's. 00:30:35
You know in terms of community, if local businesses work together and that they're organized together that we do have a stronger 00:30:37
voice and it's just it's just a way also like not just our. 00:30:43
Organizing amongst ourselves to being more effective with other business You know in our network it's it's also it has a public 00:30:50
facing side as well to one is does this we have a we have a district meeting every month where all the different clubs from the 00:30:58
area get together and we tell the other what we're doing and then if we need like Monterey Club was running the food or the wine 00:31:06
bar at the US Open and they obviously. 00:31:13
That members to support everything. So they come and say, hey this is what we're doing, we're gonna have a tent and everybody 00:31:21
wants to come volunteer, will give the club dollars or whatever, you know, but but that's how we work as an organization, so we do 00:31:26
our own thing and then we. 00:31:31
Have a. 00:31:37
Everybody gets together and just says this is what we're doing. 00:31:39
Well, I mean, for instance, the Arts District map is nearly done and so that would be really useful for the HID right now about, 00:31:42
you know, and. 00:31:46
So yeah, there's a lot of areas where we can. 00:31:51
Share strengthen our interests and. 00:31:54
Help each other. 00:31:57
Possible so. 00:31:59
I think it is too. 00:32:01
Yes. 00:32:03
And especially the way that they've explained it to me, it was easy for me to understand fairly quickly what the purpose of it was 00:32:06
and why you. 00:32:10
Why you would want to do this? Because it doesn't benefit everybody knowing what's happening and I worry about burnout. That's 00:32:14
only thing I worry about because this is always certain amount of people. Do you know 8020 rule? I don't apologize for stepping 00:32:19
out but I don't know if it was mentioned but. 00:32:25
Would this help with? 00:32:31
Like when things come up like the parklets. 00:32:33
For making a group statement. 00:32:37
You know so that it rather than. 00:32:39
City Council and the mayor getting. 00:32:42
This many things they get one giant thing saying. 00:32:45
This group, this group, this group, we're all together and we're all like a coalition. 00:32:49
Yeah, yeah, yeah. 00:32:54
Yeah. 00:32:57
From another morning. 00:32:59
That's OK. No, absolutely. I think that was the whole purpose and that's why you had the discussion last time. Yeah, And it does. 00:33:02
So there's there's half 1/2 The other, you know there's sometimes volume is good and sometimes being concise as good as well. So 00:33:07
depending on what it is, you know. 00:33:12
Having. 00:33:18
Having them work work separately as well as together, you know, would be great. 00:33:20
Anyway, there's a lot of overlap. Yeah, obviously. But it's. Yeah, yeah, it is. And that's that's something that I think is really 00:33:24
important that each one of these advisory groups and boards has their own identity. And we're we're really the chamber for the BID 00:33:32
and HD, we're the administrator. You know, we're just the ones kind of making it happen, but it's the advisory boards and the 00:33:39
groups that actually push the direction of what's happening. So I like them having their own voices in their own. 00:33:47
Identity. I think that's a good thing. 00:33:55
Yeah, absolutely. 00:33:58
But then that takes us through all the agency agenda item six. Could I just ask if there's any comments? 00:34:00
I made my comment. Thank you. 00:34:11
Thank you, Jason. We love you. 00:34:13
I'll be back. 00:34:16
Board members. 00:34:21
That's usually you're really ohh, sure, I'll go around the room. Why don't we start online because we haven't heard a lot from 00:34:23
you. Jason, what's going on in your world? 00:34:28
In the world of the BID, not much. Do you wanna hear beyond that? Because I got a lot to say on a personal note. 00:34:36
This is this is the time to talk about business updates. So if you have any business updates. 00:34:43
Yeah, I could just talk about, I mean things we have scheduled. 00:34:51
For me, me personally, would be. 00:34:56
We have several events lined up. The big, big one, which I want everybody in Pacific Grove to come to, is a large party. In fact, 00:34:59
the Chamber is helping to organize music for it. Now is on September 9th. We have new exhibits coming up. 00:35:07
And we'll have live music they'll be served and and wine served and so everybody is invited to that. We do have a movie night 00:35:16
coming on August 25th. There's a local guy named Craig Lovell who's a photographer who did a documentary film on. Don't know if 00:35:21
anybody's ever heard of Jerry Osman. 00:35:27
But he's a very well known photographer, kind of from the Ansel Ansel Adams era. 00:35:34
And we'll be screening a documentary at the gallery on that. And then, you know, some other things. But those are the two big ones 00:35:41
that I wanted to tell everybody about. 00:35:45
Ohh, thank you. 00:35:51
Moving down the table, Miss Loftus. 00:35:53
Kind of. 00:35:56
Same I think sentiment as everybody else. It's this year's just kind of been flat I think, but we did. 00:35:57
We have seen a little bit of pickup with summer traffic. 00:36:05
But I'm, you know, I just finished doing all of my holiday ordering and I'm just proceeding as normal because my. 00:36:10
Theory is is if you don't have it to sell, you can't sell it so. 00:36:18
You know, the shop is going to be very full of merchandise and it's like, you know, sometimes my. 00:36:23
My Angel mom sitting on my shoulder going but but you know. 00:36:30
My employees are all happy. 00:36:36
Everybody's employed, everybody's working. 00:36:38
So. 00:36:41
Nothing to complain about, really. 00:36:42
That's good insights, yeah. 00:36:45
Well, my employees are unhappy too, and that makes us very yes, we can be. 00:36:48
So we're business, but everybody's happy we're good. 00:36:54
But yeah, it's pretty much the same we're. 00:36:58
Really from the period of the year until about. 00:37:03
Business has been. 00:37:05
Suppressed. 00:37:06
But it's just picked up recently. 00:37:08
And I think for us it's picked up because. 00:37:10
The Conference Center seems to be busier. And where there's that compression? 00:37:13
We start to feel the bump in in business. 00:37:18
Not because we're getting groups. 00:37:22
But because other places are full and they're looking elsewhere. 00:37:23
But the monetary conference? 00:37:32
Yeah, I'm not sure about the I see the moderate Conference Center because they walk by it every day. 00:37:35
And there's a lot of buzz and bodies coming out and getting a big. 00:37:40
Buses and it's that kind of activity and they do feed people, yeah. 00:37:46
They've been really, you know, waiting for this. 00:37:51
For the command center that bump up, Yeah, but. 00:37:54
Yeah, everything is going according to plan, as busy as. 00:37:58
As we are, and it's good, but you know, we are used to going up incrementally year by year. And of course that's not happening 00:38:04
now. But yeah, but it's not happening for anyone. So yeah, yeah, I know that's that's a sad thing that I say often is that you're 00:38:10
not alone. But it doesn't make it feel any better. 00:38:17
I think that's that's true, that's true. And my best friend works, he does bookings at Bernardis and they've been down. But August 00:38:25
is phenomenal car week. I think it's going to be very strong just based on his comments alone, but. 00:38:33
They do, you know. 00:38:41
Just want seeing lot more. 00:38:43
Treatment field. 00:38:46
Five night minimum for car week? Yeah, so. 00:38:50
At their prices, yeah, it's like it's but. But people are desperate. They're calling hotels and they're not finding availability. 00:38:55
Peninsula wide So. 00:39:04
That's a good thing. 00:39:06
No. 00:39:08
Yeah. 00:39:08
Liz. 00:39:10
Yeah, You talk about the business. I'll just mention a few things about like events. 00:39:12
There's for the Arts District for anyone who's interested, or, you know, people who are interested. Our next community meeting is 00:39:19
on September the 28th. 00:39:23
And. 00:39:27
Currently some. 00:39:29
Projects are ongoing. 00:39:31
The 12 grading got started, but you had. 00:39:33
No. 00:39:38
Yeah, we can't find a sunny day to. 00:39:40
Make something that you'll see some of that but. 00:39:45
Yeah, it hasn't. 00:39:49
OK, that's that. 00:39:51
We probably be interested to know the economic development Commission is proposing that meeting on Thursday, that to do a kind of 00:39:55
a 10 year plan and economic plan because there isn't one for the city and you know even a bad plan is better than no plan. So but 00:40:05
we have, we found a really great resource which like an idiot could do it. It actually is like really easy to come up with the. 00:40:15
So here we plan. With that, we're excited. 00:40:25
Will be you know is this gets started we'll be asking a lot of the local businesses to be on the. 00:40:28
To come in and out of the subcommittees because it's a major project. We're gonna try and do rotating subcommittees so because you 00:40:36
can only have three members on it and that's not enough, so. 00:40:41
So we'll be rotating numbers and we'll be inviting. 00:40:47
People in SO. 00:40:50
It's super interesting and so if you'd like to be involved with us now, it's. 00:40:52
That's exciting. 00:40:58
And so we're going to have a fundraiser dinner for the Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust in October. 00:41:00
Looking for match funding for it because you only make a few $100.00 with these things and you know it's a really important PR. 00:41:08
Events. 00:41:15
But also it would be nice if they could. They have such good things going on. 00:41:16
We're trying. 00:41:21
I'll say very quickly, and there's a lot of forage fish in our Bay. In forage fish are the teeny tiny fish like smelt and 00:41:24
anchovies and sardines and. 00:41:28
Mackerel. And they're super sustainable, really healthy for you and very delicious. And it needs to be fished widely. As you know, 00:41:34
Monthly became famous because of sardines, but the old timers never taught the young fisherman how to fish for it because the 00:41:41
sardines anyway. So we do have great regulation to these fish, and there's only one guy in Santa Cruz who knows how to fish these. 00:41:49
It's a Vietnamese guy. And so we're hoping to get a grant to teach young fishermen how to do this, because this is. 00:41:56
Net. 00:42:04
The prisoners that. 00:42:06
It's well, it's a it's different it's you have a lamp and a net and but you have to have all the knowledge of how the fish behave 00:42:07
and wind, what times and how you read the conditions and all that and it's a it's a big deal. 00:42:14
So there's really, when you think about it, we have, you know. 00:42:20
My card on the table all the time, right? You've got a little bit on the table all the time, but you never see in any restaurant 00:42:25
these fish. 00:42:29
How many tables? And you don't really see them for sale from cooks either, so. 00:42:33
That's. 00:42:37
Christina. 00:42:39
Help with that. 00:42:40
Part of that and it's always fun when he gets fisherman and get huge amazing and competition silly games and we want to drink the 00:42:42
wine actually. 00:42:46
You know, it's fun the whole time these days, so it's fun the whole time. 00:42:52
Walked over. 00:42:57
Thursday. 00:42:58
And Liz talked about this the other day and the thing that I love about this grant and this program they're doing is that it 00:43:01
brings identity back to the Bay. And we have been known for these types of fish. It is part of the identity. So it's kind of I 00:43:06
like it. I think they're. 00:43:12
I think people will rally around it. 00:43:18
Ohh, maybe this would be time to stay at. The Arts District is planning to build up incrementally over the years. 00:43:21
A summer festival called the Kelp Festival, and that's going to be an arts and Science Festival because we want to be different 00:43:28
from all the other festivals, right? So And it's very much our PG identity of. 00:43:34
Because of the marine sanctuary and all the many marine scientists that we have in the area and also a really thriving art 00:43:40
community and bringing the two together because our science actually go together very. 00:43:45
Very well. There's amazing ideas. Jason is the brains behind this. Actually, this. Ted talks this. 00:43:51
You know St. festival, there's a sustainable fish festival or something like that to be part of the food component of it. 00:44:00
You know, this dance all kinds of things. 00:44:08
Exciting. It'll start off with just a few events and these small. 00:44:12
But. 00:44:16
This is a when you talk about giving identity to the towns, playing on your strengths and doing things that yeah, anyway. 00:44:17
Has business been? 00:44:26
It's been slow. It's starting up. 00:44:28
Groups would be better. 00:44:34
And it's been so excited about it and. 00:44:36
I see the. 00:44:40
To be resilient. 00:44:43
Please. 00:44:45
I suppose after. 00:44:46
35 years and run the school business. 00:44:48
Which is some ups and downs since the. 00:44:52
It's just one of those things, right? You just keep doing it. 00:44:54
The. 00:45:00
I have the opposite problem. 00:45:05
So we are partnering with a work room that makes our drivers in Santa Cruz, and they will be. 00:45:09
Becoming polls during brief second location, so we are extending the process of. 00:45:18
Pseudo expanding into Santa Cruz because the. 00:45:24
Gather store that is like what we are up there. 00:45:28
She's not doing well and she's sick, so she's going to be closing. So we're going to be taking that market share. We've also 00:45:31
expanded into the Hollister area, so we've been doing a lot more. 00:45:37
Hollister. 00:45:42
As you told you before, we've hired 2 new installers. So we have a group of wonderful women, Angel, Deanna. They go around and do 00:45:45
all their installations and repairs all day. And then Larry. 00:45:52
As for the last three months, only measured. So he measures and helps them and then they install, and lucky for us, Shay Home. 00:45:59
Whoever is building all those lovely homes out at the links and everything, whoever they're using for their window coverings is 00:46:06
horrible. 00:46:12
Good morning. 00:46:20
So we are we are the top dealer in Northern California right now, which is really weird. 00:46:22
Yeah, yeah, I. 00:46:34
So all three pieces doing well and I think I shovel room. So we're getting a new showroom. Hunter Douglas approached us to put in 00:46:37
all the new fancy showroom and they are actually giving us. 00:46:44
$10,000 towards it, which I've been dealing with Hunter Douglas since the 80s. They have never ever ever offered me money before 00:46:51
so everybody taking off so we're going to we've moved all the shipping receiving out of our little building into my. 00:47:00
Garage at home. So now all the dogs get the ordinary throat and we're gonna. 00:47:10
Tear out everything re sheetrock, put in new flooring and paint. 00:47:15
We will have a giant display cable in the back room where we can like it's about this big where you can put out samples and stuff. 00:47:21
And then we will also have all the music plays in front room. So false draperies by the end of the year will look completely 00:47:27
different again. So that's kind of what we're doing. So I have a very high stress level right now. 00:47:34
But yeah, that's so I can't complain about business. So great. Yeah, I know it's a great success, very positive in this time of 00:47:42
uncertainty. Yeah, so. 00:47:47
I love talking about cherries, but. 00:47:55
A couple of things that are coming up the chamber, we have our flavors of it in September. So obviously we'll be coming to all of 00:48:00
our restaurant partners, but we also set up wine and beer and cider in particular. 00:48:08
In other places as well, not just restaurants. So you know, Coldwell Banker, we used their room, Bradley Photographic, we used his 00:48:18
room so that you're using other businesses to bring people in as well. 00:48:25
We're gonna do the shuttles like we did last year, which was really helpful and fun for people to be on Red Engine rides and 00:48:34
whatnot. So it's just gonna get better and better. We Christie's already working on bands for certain areas. Certain districts 00:48:40
we're adding in Forest Hill this year because they weren't on it last year. There's tons of restaurants there, so it's exciting. 00:48:46
It's looking looking good for end of September. Our first ever Rock in the Jewel happened last Thursday. Now it will be the last 00:48:53
Friday of every month. 00:48:59
That we're now we have a first Friday event and the last Friday events. 00:49:05
And those will go through October and it was really fun. And what else am I leaving out? I feel ohh well car week obviously. So 00:49:09
there are four car week events in Pacific Grove starting on Tuesday as the classic Motorsports. 00:49:16
Um, these all happen. I believe plastic is like. 00:49:23
Two to six is the show but things get shut down and and you know cars are being parked during the day. That's on Tuesday. 00:49:26
Wednesday is the little car show on Lighthouse Ave. These are both lighthouse. 00:49:32
Same kind of time frame and footprint. Thursday is a break on Lighthouse, which is nice. You could have break on one day because 00:49:39
that event happens out at the golf course. That's Legends of the Autobahn and that is from morning until. 00:49:46
Early afternoon I believe they start at 9 and and at 3 ish. Judging and whatnot happens right after that. And then the final event 00:49:54
which is amazing, it's the PG wrote a Rotary is auto rally back on lighthouse on Friday. They do the auto rally on lighthouse and 00:50:01
then they do a drive as well at the very end. 00:50:07
All of these bring people to town, which is nice, And the Bubbly Benz contracts. They did do their first cleaning, but they didn't 00:50:15
do the tops and so I had a conversation. The tops will be cleaned. They're going to do that next round right before car week so 00:50:23
that we can look nice and shiny for all the guests that come into town. And I have told businesses before, you might not be a car 00:50:30
business, but if you even have a card with a picture of a car on it, put it in your front window. 00:50:37
A piece of art that is correlated. Anything to draw the people who are here into your storefront. And it doesn't have to have 00:50:45
anything to do with your business at all. It could literally be, you know, a painting or a toy car. I've seen one little toy car 00:50:52
in front of a realtor's office and it just shows. You're kind of part of it. I don't like what you're talking about looking down 00:51:00
purple. So think about if you can clean your storefront areas outside, pick the weeds out. 00:51:07
Maybe we're we are in the window of people arriving already for this event that happens in two weeks. So now is the time to do 00:51:15
some sprucing up on the outside if you can. Yeah. Is there any poster or for Car Week? Yeah, we actually do have one. We can. 00:51:23
Come to the chamber office. We'll print a few of them. We have one that we do and it's inside Carbon Magazine. And then we also 00:51:33
put it in the. 00:51:36
The areas. 00:51:40
Marketing as well once we get closer. So that's now. So yeah, we'll bring one. 00:51:43
Anything else That's all happening within a few weeks. Just everything. 00:51:49
Yeah. 00:51:54
Alright ohh. 00:51:55
Yes, Can I ask what's happening with the? 00:51:57
So that St. building which so 520, yes, the one that's. 00:52:00
Was having issues with getting their electricity. That was their transformer was the delay and that was months and months of delay 00:52:07
is now fixed. So they do have their transformer and their units are now hooked up, which is nice. 00:52:14
And they still have a few of the. 00:52:22
Top apartments or condos to sell the bottom floor. They've got most of it filled. Muse Gallery is coming over and opening another 00:52:26
location. Simon Bowles painting, if you know him, is filling one of the spaces. Builder supplies in one and then one is a Realtors 00:52:33
office. But there is also a belief that. 00:52:40
Huge spot in the front that hasn't been filled yet, so slowly but surely taking way longer than what it was proposed. But that is 00:52:47
kind of normal these days. Sidewalks are open, doors are open, lights are on kind of thing, but no grand opening yet. They were 00:52:55
hoping to do a grand opening sometime at the end of this year where they invite the public and hey, we're open now, so. 00:53:02
Movie theaters, old and strong. The suggestion that was made, the proposal that was going to be made for that area was pulled off 00:53:12
the council agenda. 00:53:17
Table to no date certain so I don't know what's happening with it because it's. 00:53:23
Just in no man's land right now. 00:53:29
And it's not on the agenda for this Wednesday either. 00:53:32
America, Bank of America. They have started renovations on the inside, on the interior. Some of these taking it. No, not. Well, 00:53:35
somebody bought the building. Yeah, so they still have at least. 00:53:41
I think they've at least one of the two properties, so they're starting to do stuff, but it's all internal, you can't see much. 00:53:47
And then they started the demo on. 00:53:54
Which one? Ohh PG hotel so that is. 00:53:57
That is supposed to actually start the end of August. There's, there's sign. I know the guy that owns Ohh. Yeah. Yeah. There's 00:54:02
signs up that say like demo is imminent. So within this month. Yeah, yeah, they're already in there like. 00:54:09
Chase fell out of escrow. 00:54:18
Yeah, so there was someone who bought Chase and then they the escrow fell out. So they're now looking for. 00:54:20
Someone else? Yeah, Another buyer. And that's just the buyer of the building, not tenants. 00:54:29
Which isn't bad at this. It's going to need them. I know you did. 00:54:34
Building downtown. 00:54:39
It's pretty big. I was trying to think of a square footage. Do you remember it was like 9000 something? 00:54:44
So, yeah, and there are the proposal for the the one prior who was was in escrow was housing on top, you know retail and kind of 00:54:51
similar to what it's been there for. 00:54:57
The Chase Bank. One thing, yeah. The the one who fell out of escrow that they were going to do with it. 00:55:05
Still waiting for Coastal Commission hearing currently. 00:55:13
Not a whole lot of news coming out of that, unfortunately, right now. 00:55:18
Is there a long holdings, very long haul? Well, I know that that one in particular is it is that one piece that they have to have 00:55:24
the hearing to move forward. There was some interest of having a meeting from I think a couple of the. 00:55:32
The commissioners that that meeting didn't happen. I think it was scheduled for last week that didn't happen. So it's just sort of 00:55:41
you know, waiting game and a lot of. 00:55:46
Pushing things down the road, which is unfortunate because we all lose when things keep getting. 00:55:51
Getting pushed and pushed. So is there anything that? 00:55:56
With the Council. 00:56:00
That we should be aware of anything that. 00:56:02
It's coming up that needs support. 00:56:05
As far as business related there? 00:56:08
Well, OK. On the Parklands right now, yeah, that's The thing is there were quite a few business items on the agenda that they all 00:56:14
got pulled off because they had other things and they had to go back to. 00:56:20
Possession. So. 00:56:26
The majority of those things were pulled off and they were business related, but none of them have been rescheduled to a desert, 00:56:28
so. 00:56:33
We're OK for now. We put it to years and strong. 00:56:40
In. 00:56:46
Right, so. 00:56:48
Done. 00:56:50
June the 30th, so this is. 00:56:51
Amongst all, very quickly. 00:56:55
We're almost already around to start Spring. 00:56:57
And then we'll go into Maine. And if they want to take it down, we have to take it down. And well, I think, yeah, I actually wrote 00:57:02
to ask some information on this because it would be sheer lunacy to start demolition and construction in our high schools, right. 00:57:09
So once the permit. 00:57:17
Finishes on 30th of June. It's. 00:57:24
You know, it would be very considerate if the Council would. 00:57:28
Postpone any kind of work until after the high school in September and October are beautiful months. They're also very busy, so 00:57:33
it's like, you know, just the wrong time of year. So November could be a start date for any work. That would be awesome, I know. 00:57:40
I feel that. 00:57:50
Our outgoing city manager was very pro economic vitality and. 00:57:52
You know, I think maybe our support for getting a new city manager who also feels that businesses are. 00:57:57
I don't know. Once we get our group together, you know? 00:58:07
Typically typically on new hires, they have a community panel along with a professional panel so. 00:58:12
And you know, hopefully. 00:58:18
You know there is business. 00:58:20
In that room as well, you know, as part of part of the pieces of the community, so. 00:58:23
That's going to be voted on tomorrow. No, no interim. Just acting. No interim. Ohh shoot. 00:58:30
Hold on. It is, yeah. The finance director, Cortana, is on it. Hold on. 00:58:37
Exactly. 00:58:42
2 seconds, 2 seconds. 00:58:44
First item. 00:58:46
City manager Pro Tem. 00:58:50
With hiring authority effective immediately and that would be Tora Hannah, that's the one that's along, yeah. She's the finance 00:58:52
director currently. And then also this is the recommended action motion to direct the city attorney to prepare the ordinance to 00:58:59
amend the salary schedule motion to create City manager recruitment subcommittee. 00:59:05
And then or alternately discuss and take other actions. So those are all the different. 00:59:13
Pieces that are on the agenda and it is the first thing on the City Council agenda on Wednesday at 6:00 PM. 00:59:18
And you can attend either in person at City Hall or online. And if you don't have that log in, every single Monday, the chamber 00:59:24
sends out an e-mail, our e-news called the Spotlight. And I always put the links in for you to just click on. So just look for the 00:59:32
Spotlight and it'll be right there. And then we also post the videos of the prior meeting as well in that e-mail so that you can 00:59:39
look back as well at at what what happens. Well, so we're just trying to. 00:59:46
You know, communicate everything as as best we can. 00:59:54
All right. 00:59:59
We are at 9:31, so we do need to adjourn exactly. 01:00:01
They're coming and we'll see you next month. 01:00:07
Yeah. Thank you, guys. 01:00:12
I'm excited about the logo. 01:00:14

scroll up
